Tasting a wine is very different to drinking it.
Tasting means sampling and carefully analyzing what our senses tell us, paying particular
attention to the qualitites and characteristics, or perhaps even the negative points..
The impressions received at a tasting are subject to so many factors, all rather difficult
to establish beforehand that it is essential to take certain precautions before embarking
on a delicate sensorial undertaking. Professional tasters are expected to make the
most stringent preparations before a tasting session. Aiming to limit our
suggestions to the hedonistic and not the technical, we suggest that the senses
should not have been subjected to strong flavours, smoke, coffee or liquers prior to a
tasting session. It is even advisable to taste wine when hungry, as this physical
state makes for enhanced sensitivity.
The taster should find a quiet, well-lit place
and carefully choose the most suitable glass. |
